Magellan Compass 4.2 for PlayBook Released

Magellan Compass4.2 version of the PlayBook of Magellan Compass has been released to BlackBerry World (aka App World).  It will probably be a few days before users have the opportunity to download this update since this week is a busy week for RIM.  But once it is available, users will now have:

  • Ability to save which layers are initially started when the app starts.
  • Measure layer that allows the user to pick points on the map and obtain distance and bearing to each point along the polyline.
  • Map scale layer shows a scale on top of the map.
  • Enhanced KML features to manage more KML files.
  • GPS Zoom layer that will dynamically adjust the map level based on the speed of the GPS sensor.  So at slower speeds, the map is zoomed in, and higher speeds, the map zooms out.
  • Enhance German translation.

Update to BB10 will either occur later this week or in two weeks based on information and updates we receive from RIM in the next few days.

Talk Clock 2 Released for PlayBook

Talk Clock IconVersion 2 of Talk Clock has finally been released.  BB10 development placed this app on hold for way too long, so we’re very happy to make it available to PlayBook users.  This release has a lot of requested features including:

  • Choices of voices including those in different languages. Including: English, British English, Australian English, Spanish, Italian, French, French Canadian, Turkish, Dutch, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Greek, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Korean, Arabic, Hungarian, Finnish, Czech, Japanese, and Danish (plus a few variations).
  • RSS feeds displayed along the bottom.  RSS feeds can be spoken and is really nice to hear the news instead of reading the news
  • Weather can now be displayed from any location. Simply enter an address (city, state, postal code, etc) and it will do a search to locate that information and display the weather for multiple days.

Papillon Currency Converter now “Built for BlackBerry”

Two apps approved for “Built for BlackBerry” certification

built for BlackberryWe received two applications certifications from BlackBerry today for Tipster and Papillon Converter.  This certification shows that these apps are top-tier apps for BB10 devices and will provided additional marketing opportunities for us.

Magellan Compass Rejected for Built for BlackBerry

Magellan CompassMagellan Compass for BB10 was rejected for the “Built for BlackBerry” (BFB) certification.  This was a blow to us, since the app was designed specifically for BlackBerry and incorporated all the tool kits, guidelines, icons and services that was possible for BB10 and the development environment for both PlayBook and BB10.  The certificate program is to highlight quality apps and will provide increase exposure for the app.  This exposure would of course allow us continue development of the app with a long list of planned enhancements. BFB apps are to be of high quality in which we believe Magellan Compass would easily pass.  We now know that BFB bar is very high and we look forward to see all the amazing apps that do get certified under this criteria.

We failed because the app was insufficient in the areas of communication (sharing content), productivity and entertainment value. We obviously disagree with RIMs decision in this area and have asked for additional clarification.  We don’t expect to hear from them in the short time and we want to get some plans in place once we receive more detail. We are looking to our user community to suggest what might be added to the app that would raise it to the BFB bar.

Magellan Compass 4.1 for the PlayBook released

Magellan CompassVersion 4.1 of Magellan Compass has been released to App World for review.  This release is for the PlayBook and people can expect the BB10 version to be released in a few days.  This release includes:

  • Addition of USGS maps
  • Addition of Nokia maps
  • Minor fixes to KML import

We are working on finishing up 4.x for BB10 since RIM has some deadlines approaching fast.  Lots of exciting things happening for BlackBerry in the next few weeks!

USGS Map Received a request today to add USGS maps to Magellan Compass.  It was a Saturday and the 1000 of other things that need to be done before the BB10 release was just going to have to wait.  No, really.  It was easy to add.  Will be available for the next BB10 and PlayBook releases.
